Our extra-curricular highlights
Sports Carnivals
Our Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals are held in the first two terms of each year, and are run in conjunction with the Singleton Small Schools. These are exciting opportunities for our students to participate and showcase their skills. Outstanding performances may see students go on to represent Kirkton Public School at Upper Hunter PSSA Zone Carnivals, and potentially onto Hunter PSSA Carnivals.
Performing Arts
Our students have the opportunity to audition for and participate in Star Struck. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn dance routines, develop their skills and coordination, and work as a team. Star Struck is also a fantastic chance to meet students from other skills and expand their social capacity and interactions.
Our whole school attends a Star Struck performance as one of our excursions.
Cultural Activities
Kirkton Public School proudly acknowledges and celebrates we are on Wonnarua land, and seeks to strengthen our students understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and learning. Every year we join the Singleton Small Schools for a combined NAIDOC Day celebration.
We engage local Wonnarua artist Kerri-Ann Taggart to teach our students about Aboriginal art and story telling, and have visits from NASCA who teach our students Traditional Aboriginal Games and dance.
Trips and Excursions
At Kirkton Public School, we believe learning extends beyond the classroom. Our exciting trips and excursions provide students with hands-on experiences that enrich their education, inspire curiosity, and foster teamwork. From school camps to educational workshops, our programs are designed to engage students in real-world learning while creating lasting memories. We are committed to offering safe, inclusive, and enjoyable opportunities that support our students' growth and development.
Leadership Opportunities
At Kirkton Public School, we believe every student has the potential to be a leader. Leadership is not defined by a badge or title, but by the ability to act with respect, take responsibility, and contribute positively to our school community. Through a range of authentic opportunities, students are supported to develop confidence, decision-making skills, and a strong sense of responsibility for themselves and others.
Our student leadership model encourages voice, agency and active citizenship across all year levels. From classroom monitors and library leaders to sports captains, house captains and school leaders, students are given meaningful roles that contribute to the daily running of the school. These experiences teach accountability, teamwork and service — key elements of our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Active Learning.
Elected student leaders represent their peers with pride, helping to plan and lead assemblies, coordinate events, and support whole-school initiatives such as PBL Celebration Days, environmental projects and community fundraisers.
Staff play an active role in nurturing leadership potential. Teachers explicitly model and teach leadership qualities through classroom routines, PBL lessons, and wellbeing programs such as Grow Your Mind and Zones of Regulation. They mentor students to reflect on their choices, demonstrate initiative, and develop empathy, resilience and teamwork.
By empowering students to lead with integrity and kindness, Kirkton Public School helps build a community of capable, confident and compassionate young people who are ready to make a difference — both within our school and beyond.
