Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
A year at our school
Sports Carnivals
Our Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals are held in the first two terms of each year, and are run in partnership with the Singleton Small Schools. These are exciting opportunities for our students to participate and showcase their skills. Outstanding performances may see students go on to represent Kirkton Public School at Upper Hunter PSSA Zone Carnivals, and potentially onto Hunter PSSA Carnivals.
Book Week
Book Week at Kirkton Public School celebrates our shared love of reading and storytelling. Each year, students and staff embrace the national theme through character parades, author visits, and classroom activities that bring literature to life. The week promotes imagination, literacy, and the joy of books for all ages. Families are invited to join in the fun by supporting creative costumes and engaging in reading at home. Book Week reflects our commitment to building confident, enthusiastic readers and fostering a culture where reading is valued and enjoyed across the whole school.
Star Struck
Our students have the opportunity to audition for and participate in Star Struck. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn dance routines, develop their skills and coordination, and work as a team. Star Struck is also a fantastic chance to meet students from other skills and expand their social capacity and interactions.
Our whole school attends a Star Struck performance as one of our excursions.
Community Events
Kirkton Public School values family and community connections, and we proudly host a range of events that bring our community together throughout the year. Our Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls give students the chance to choose thoughtful gifts, while our Grandparents Day invites loved ones to visit classrooms, share stories, and celebrate learning across generations. The K–2 Easter Hat Parade fills the playground with colour, creativity, and excitement as students showcase their handmade designs. These community traditions foster belonging, strengthen partnerships, and reflect the caring culture of our school.
ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day holds special significance at Kirkton Public School, providing a meaningful opportunity for students to learn about remembrance, respect, and national history. The school community gathers for a formal service led by student leaders, featuring readings, wreath laying, and reflection on the ANZAC values of courage, mateship, and sacrifice. This important tradition helps students understand Australia’s heritage and the importance of gratitude and service. Through participation in ANZAC Day, our students develop empathy, citizenship, and pride in our shared history.
Intensive Swimming
The Intensive Swimming Program at Kirkton Public School focuses on developing essential water safety and swimming skills for all students. Conducted by qualified instructors, the program provides daily lessons that build confidence, stamina, and technique across a variety of swimming levels. Students learn about water awareness, rescue strategies, and safe practices, ensuring they are equipped for aquatic environments. The program supports our commitment to student wellbeing and aligns with the PDHPE curriculum, helping every child stay active, safe, and confident in and around water.
NAIDOC Day
Kirkton Public School proudly acknowledges and celebrates we are on Wonnarua land, and seeks to strengthen our students understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and learning. Every year we join the Singleton Small Schools for a combined NAIDOC Day celebration.
We engage local Wonnarua artist Kerri-Ann Taggart to teach our students about Aboriginal art and story telling, and have visits from NASCA who teach our students Traditional Aboriginal Games and dance.
PBL Celebration Days
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a key part of the culture at Kirkton Public School, and our PBL Celebration Day recognises the students who consistently demonstrate our core values of respect, responsibility, and resilience. The celebration includes engaging activities, team challenges, and special acknowledgements that reinforce positive behaviour and collective success. PBL Celebration Day encourages every student to make positive choices, build strong relationships, and contribute to a safe and supportive learning environment. It reflects our whole-school commitment to recognising effort, achievement, and personal growth.
Kirkton Public School provides a welcoming and supportive environment where students are encouraged to learn, engage, and achieve their full potential. Our dedicated and committed teachers take the time to understand each individual student, ensuring that learning experiences are tailored to meet their unique needs, while fostering a sense of belonging and lifelong friendships— a parent of Kirkton Public School
